If you are planning to move and to use self storage it would be to your advantage to take a good month to prepare plans for the move. When you set a moving date go on and obtain a storage unit. Make sure you have a wagon and or trailer to help carry your items to storage. Purchase the packing supplies you could need such as boxes, butcher paper, packing tape, bubble wrap, labels, permanent marker and gather old blankets and towels. Start to pack your boxes, making note of what is within by keeping a packing list. Properly label the box on all outer edges and the top.

Get rid of items you know you don’t need or want. There is not any sense in storing stuff that you will never use. Have a yard sell or visit a consignment shop with your unneeded items. If storing appliances confirm all food have been cleaned out of them and they are defrosted and dried. It is rarely a brilliant idea to store any food items. Either eat it or give it away rather than placing food in storage. Try to outline how you want the self storage to be laid out, so you can quickly pack it and unpack it. Make sure everything is clean before it is stored.

If you are moving and using self storage for your items, ensure you turn off all the utilities in your current home. Give them your move out date to avoid continuing to pay for services when you will not be there. Give everybody a change of address, including the storage company. If you have things that don’t belong to you, return them to their rightful owners. No requirement in storing items for others. Make sure you have masses of help for the day you move, especially if you have heavy and bulky products that must be stored.

If you intend to place your refrigerator and fridge in self storage, the day before, switch it off and disconnect it. Completely remove all food and defrost them. Totally clean them out and drain all lines to water and ice dispensers. Same with washing machine. Cover the ends of hoses with plastic bags to keep water from leading in storage. Place opened boxes of sodium bicarbonate in them to keep the air fresh, and be certain to keep doors and lids open while in storage. Clean out garbage cans that'll be stored. Deodorize then and place smaller boxes within to maximize storage space.

On the day you are to pack the self storage unit make sure you have a correct list of everything that is going. Have the list to indicate which boxes, and then make a laid out map of the storage unit itself. Keep a copy with you and a copy in the storage unit, by the door. This will save time when you come back to unpack the storage and bring the things back into your house.
