i just never really understood why doctor gordon would want to help jigsaw. why?
also, in Saw I at the beginning, why would jigsaw place the key to adams chain in the tub with him so that he could easily leave?

Dr. Gordon is indeed still alive. At the end of the first movie, after having cut his own foot off, he crawls out of the room to find help. Jigsaw then leaves the room, closing the door. Obviously, Jigsaw would have seen Dr. Gordon crawling for help. Gordon, even though he didn’t complete it in time, he did complete the test by cutting his own foot off, wanting to find help for Adam and to save his family. He did appreciate his life and what he had so much better after his test. Jigsaw saw and heard all of this in the room. He saw the change in Dr. Gordon, so he probably got the paramedics for him and saved his life. It was still unknown by Saw VI what really happened to him, but as pointed out by a few people, when you watch the first test in Saw II, you see somebody limping to the table to begin the surgery to implant the key under the man’s eye. 1. Only a doctor or one with great medical knowledge could perform something like that. 2. The way he was limping indicated that something was wrong with the man’s right leg (or foot, maybe?). I don’t think Gordon was taken as an apprentice, but was asked to assist Jigsaw in some of his tests, as a way to say thank you for granting him a new lease and outlook on life.
