Q&A: How do you fix hardwood floors that are affected by humidity?
Question by : How do you fix hardwood floors that are affected by humidity?
i have hard wood floors on a slab foundation during the summertime when the humidity is higher a section of the floor raise up where you can push the floor down a little. I believe this is because the wood expands due to the humidity and therefore the floor “bubbles” up. Should i rip the floors up and trim off a section against the wall to fix this????The guy who put them in is a piece of shit and won’t return my phone calls anymore.

First suggestion for both in the summer and winter is a dehumidifier or humidifier .A dehumidifier for summer..
.And a humidifier for the winter if needed. Having the correct humidity in the air for summer and winter is important.
You don t say what type of installation method was used.
If you have hard wood is should be an engineered wood and glued or floating floor. To help eliminate this , yes I would check if the cut is to tight to a fixed object and it could cause the floors to buckle. If its a glue down floor , you won t be able to do this. But it also means the glue has released and you ve got problems.

Is the black/tar paper required under hardwood floor?
Question by mtsd5468: Is the black/tar paper required under hardwood floor?
I am helping to install a hardwood floor into my neighbor’s house. I have done two similar floors before this one. In both of those cases, I used the black paper between the sub-floor and the hardwood. I hand stapled the paper down and than installed the floor using staples with the air powered hardwood floor machine. Both of those floors came out well and I am very satisfied.
My neighbor purchased the wood for his project at Lumber Liquidators. He was told that “since he is putting a wood pattern into the floor” he should not use the black paper.” The pattern is just a border about 1 foot in from the wall using a darker wood.
I thought the black paper was installed to prevent squeaking between the floor and the sub-floor.
So should we use the black paper or not????
What would happen if we do not install the paper?
Cost savings is not an issue. We are not being wasteful, just don”t want to cheap out on an important item.
THANKS A WHOLE LOT.

Either a felt tar paper like you used or a rosin paper. Some wood manufactures spec one or the other or either. This is 2 fold for the usage.1 is to help prevent squeaks from wood to wood contact and the other as a moisture barrier.

Damaged hardwood floor
The floor had the fake floating hardwood on top of it concealing the red oak underneath. A large water spill happened about a year or so before creating “speed bumps” in between the hallway and living room. After removing the fake flooring I discovered damage throughout the house ranging from hundreds of staples still attached to the red oak, buckled boards, paint splatter, mold, water stains, cut boards in the floor from a circular saw, drastic discoloration, among other things.
