Metal Roof Products Withstand Test Of Time

Replacing a roof is not a chore everyone wants to confront and most homeowners look for ways to make the time between re-roofing longer. Metal roof products have been around for a few decades and newer styles and colors are making the metal roofing products more popular than ever, as they are designed to last the lifetime of the house.

Available in a multitude of colors, there are also different designs for different types of architecture. Some of the metal roofing products are designed to look similar to wood shake shingles and others to resemble typical asphalt shingles. For roof surfaces with a high pitch, metal roofing products appear to be vertical siding and can add to the structure’s appeal, especially with color coordinated to the rest of the metal roof.

There are some advantages to installing metal roofing products, the first of which is the durability. Whether it is steel, aluminum or copper it will probably last as long as the house, but if you do not plan to stay in the house for a long time, you probably will not realize the cost savings over the years. The initial investment will be higher than traditional asphalt shingles, but for those who plan to stay in the house for a long time it can be a good investment.

Snow No Match For Metal Roofing Products

During the winter when snow falls, the metal roof will warm quickly from the sun, helping to melt the snow and keep the roof clear. On the down side, not everyone will be thrilled listening to rain beating on a metal roof and being in a house with metal roofing products can be unnerving in a heavy downpour or in a hailstorm. However, there are insulating products available to deaden the noise on the inside.

Hail can also damage metal roofing products as can other hard items that happen to hit the roof. Although there are many dent-resistant products, there may still be some damage if proper precautions are not taken.

Metal roofs are fire resistant and are typically given a Class A fire rating. However, if the roof was installed over an asphalt roof, that material will burn and could cause the fire to become hot enough to melt the metal roofing products.

Installation of metal roofing products is usually quicker as most come in sections or sheets and a contractor can install them considerably faster than traditional shingles. They are also good on roofs with little slope.

Building a deck is more than just good lumber & skilled labor.

Example of hidden deck fastner installation

Few people realize that it's not just about maintaining your deck after it's built that circumvents your deck from splitting, splintering, cupping, or rotting.  It's also about building your deck with the correct materials.

Most decks built in the past 25 yers have used the simplest deck building material, galvanized nails, to keep the boards attached to the structure. As a matter of fact, builders have used nails like this for decades and thought very little about other alternatives.  Now, stainless steel hidden deck fasteners are becoming more popular and even have power tools to help simplify their installation.

Out of all the fasteners on the market TigerClaw by far, is the most popular. You need to understand, TigerClaw Fasteners were created by a contractor irritated with the expense and intensive labor of other hidden fastening systems. With a free installation block in every box, these fasteners install faster and easier than other comparable fasteners. You can save more on labor costs than compared with other hidden fastener installations since all work is done from the top.

Strength and durability are assured since they are built from heavy gauge stainless steel. TigerClaw hidden deck fasteners offer resilient hold-down power for both synthetic decking materials & wood. They allow the beauty of the wood to be preserved and reduce splitting, splintering, cupping and rotting.

The concept of a nail free deck surface is one that is also aesthetically pleasing. With many new composites and clear-grained wood decking available, defacing a smooth, even deck surface with unwanted rows of screws or nails is becoming increasingly unwanted.

I know a growing number of contractors are aware of hidden deck fasteners, but the majority aren't. This article's objective is to raise consumer awareness, and to bring hidden deck fasteners into the mainstream market.

With hidden deck fasteners, you can produce a better looking, longer lasting, safer deck at an affordable price.  Their’s even an easy TigerClaw estimator tool to help you figure out how much these fasteners would cost to use on your deck. What's preventing you from choosing hidden deck fasteners over nails now?

Here are few other things to keep in mind when building a durable wooden deck:

Use naturally decay-resistant or treated lumber for wooden decks and other outdoor structures. Don't let untreated wood posts or lumber sit directly on concrete.
* Clean joints between deck boards or between a deck and a house so debris and dirt won't retain moisture.
* Aluminum downspouts and water run-off should be guided away from the deck
* Potted plants resting on the deck or porch can cause moisture pooling; likewise, plants and shrubs planted nearby can contribute to moisture and water buildup on and around your wooden deck. Make sure that watering tools (hoses, sprinklers, etc..) not spray the deck.
* Ensure that the underside of the porch breathes properly, it is critical to maintain airflow. This space should not be completely enclosed as to prevent moisture buildup.
* Don't let fall leaves, barbeque grill covers, etc…. layout on your deck for long periods. This promotes moisture & it's best friend mold to develop underneath.
* Add stains and sealers before the deck looks like it’s needing it.Create a consistent schedule where you add the sealer so it's consistently apllied before the wood starts getting dried out.  These can treat the wood and keep moisture from leading to rot
* If you have a 2nd story deck over a ground floor deck, make sure you get an underdeck drainage system to prevent additional wear to the bottom deck. This also allows your ground floor deck to feel like a covered patio on rainy days, and it can be used as an additional living space.

Hope these ideas help you keep your wooden deck beautiful for many years to come.

Warning: Your Home Could Harm You!

I read some scary statistics the other day – over 1 in 3 people in North America and Europe live in houses with damp and mold problems. Those who rent their homes, particularly on the lower end of the market, will no doubt have come across mold infestations when looking at properties. Most people, however, are not even aware of the issue. It’s very common not to even be able to see damp at first – it often hides in corners, behind wallpaper and even in the walls.

Health issues
Damp has been linked with an alarming range of illnesses. Many times people get hayfever-like symptoms as a result of damp – watery eyes, sneezing and nasal congestion.Far worse is the recent study in the UK which linked damp with causing asthma in children. You can also develop quite severe respiratory problems as a result of damp.  Another recent study even revealed a connection between mold and depression

Causes
So how does this silent predator manage to infect so many homes? In small quantities, mould is entirely natural and can easily be dealt with. But things start getting really serious when it is able to spread and fungal spores begin to develop. The buildup of fungal spores and mold happens when high humidity combines with poor ventilation.Water collects in the atmosphere from places like the bathroom, as well as condensation on windows. But this moisture needs somewhere to go!  Lack of ventilation can be down to poor workmanship and failure to ensure proper damp proofing when the home was built.  It also down to lack of proper ventilation. One bad side of being concerned about saving on heat loss and going green at home is that with all the insulation there’s often nowhere for moisture to escape.

What to do about it
With all the problems associated with mold all of us should be concerned with preventing it. It’s not just for people who already have damp problems.  Once it takes hold, it can be very difficult and expensive to get rid of it.  Here are some top tips on how to avoid damp buildup in your home or workplace:

  1. Dry up any build up of condensation you notice around the house within 24-48 hours.  Remember, mould can’t grow without moisture.
  2. Give the moisture in your house an escape route by getting proper ventilation.Aside from air vents, something as simple as opening a window after taking a shower can help.
  3. Be sure to have any cold surfaces insulated where possible – they’re the places where condensation often develop at home.
  4. It’s well worth considering investing in one of the many dehumidifiers out there to remove moisture from the atmosphere.  Certain portable air conditioners also do the job, with the added bonus of keeping you cool in the summer.
  5. Know your rights.  If a damp problem really takes hold it can ruin your life and bank balance. Check if your insurance policy covers mould damage. Tenants should push their landlords to have a professional damp inspector visit and assess the house.
