Perception is another key quality to have during a renovation. It is essential to see what is really going on. Most contractors are honest people working hard and trying to support their families. Altering your decision about the color or the tile, or the floor plan for the umpteenth time might create tension. Most contractors want to do good work because they want a continued relationship and referrals. Anyone who has to tear up quality work is likely to be frustrated because you decided you didn’t like the way it looked after all. I’m paying for it you may say but, it requires time and resources that might through other scheduled renovations off track. It is important then to be able to perceive realistically the expectations of a renovation. Expecting a laminate counter to look like granite will only lead to aggravation and dissatisfaction.

A sense of humor helps when coping with the discomfort of workers in the house, dust in the coffee and seeing plastic everywhere. Recognize the advantages of the renovation; you can tell everyone your dandruff is drywall dust and the reason you missed the boring and unnecessary conference call was because the contractor cut through the phone wiring.

Renovations are never without their challenges. Being aware of that and having a good sense of humor, perspective and clear perceptions and expectations are easily the most important components of a successful remodel.
