Kitchen Design Ideas: Achieving The Kitchen You’ve Always Wanted

by Fixit Guy on Jul.21, 2008, under Remodeling

So you have decided that your kitchen is outdated and could use an entire remodel. You may have a few kitchen remodeling ideas about what you want but maybe you have been unable to tie it altogether, or perhaps you may be stuck and have no idea where to start, but you have definitely decided that you will no longer suffer with that antiquated kitchen for another moment. Before you start, though, consider a few of these things that will help your remodeling go smoothly and bring you the kitchen of your dreams.

Start With the Cabinetry

One of the best things to start with is your cabinetry. This not only is a major visual focus of your kitchen, usually, but installing kitchen cabinets might also take up a major part of your budget. Don’t make the mistake of doing other parts of the kitchen remodel first and end up with short funds to finish out the cabinetry.

The best way to begin the process is to consult with a cabinetry professional. They will be able to translate your ideas into actual plans for your new kitchen layout, ensuring that all of the options you want will have room in your remodeled kitchen. For instance, if you want lazy Susans in all your corner cabinets they will make sure there is the proper amount of space left to accommodate them. A professional will also know if there could be any problems with your layout. For example, your plumbing may need to be moved so you have enough room to accommodate a new dishwasher. Planning for a small kitchen design can also be a bit more challenging due to space limitations.

Upgrade Your Kitchen Appliances

If you’re completely redoing your kitchen, the next things you’re probably going to want to think about are the appliances. If you’re upgrading everything, good for you. Today, appliances are better designed and more energy-efficient. In general, they make life easier for you, too. In some cases, the monthly utility bill savings you enjoy will pay for the new appliances in a very short time.

Make sure that the finish you choose for your appliances is going to go well with your cabinetry. For example, your cabinets may be a pale color, so that white appliances would make your kitchen look washed out. You also need to let your cabinet builder know of any appliances that are not standard sized. This, too, will change your layout. An example of this might be if you choose a Sub-zero refrigerator. They are much larger than a regular refrigerator and will need to have the correct room allowed for it.

Other Considerations

As the kitchen is often the central meeting place in the home, you might want to consider incorporating built-in seating in your kitchen as you remodel. Often times you can do this by adding an island in the kitchen for people to gather around.

When thinking about flooring, try to choose a surface which can be cleaned easily. Many people end up disappointed because they paid a lot of money for beautiful flooring only to find out that it is next to impossible to keep clean. Do some research before committing to flooring.

When trying to design your dream kitchen keep a few things in mind. Start with your cabinetry, and have a professional help you lay out your kitchen hand. Incorporate everything else as appropriate so that everything will come together just as you envisioned for your dream kitchen.
