Wallpaper Scraper vs. Steamer
by Fixit Guy on Jun.23, 2007, under Painting and Wall Coverings
Removing wallpaper is a tedious job and if it is attached to drywall it can be even more so since the covering on drywall is paper and the glue adheres very well to it. Some cases if painting over it or total removal is not an option you may want to look into installing new sheetrock.
If your wallpaper has been applied directly to sheetrock, you may have better results using a wallpaper removing agent or chemical rather than a steamer.
The reason is a steamer may also loosen the sheetrock or the paper backing on the sheetrock, and may cause small to large pieces to come off with the wallpaper when you remove it.
If you have already started your project and are seeing small or even large pieces of sheetrock coming off during your steaming process, take a look at this article http://www.wallpaper.mydiyguide.com/tips&secrets/wallrepair.shtml It will help you repair the holes that have formed.
If you just cant stand the idea of using chemicals to remove your wallpaper - or - you know the sheetrock beneath the wallpaper is old and will definitely crumble when you try a steamer, you might want to consider painting over the wallpaper.
If painting is the way to go, you will want to paint over your wallpaper using an oil based primer or sealer followed by 1 to 4 coats of finishing paint.
