Once you’re through buying a chainsaw, there are certain requirements for maintaining and cleaning this handy tool.

The engine of a chainsaw is lubricated by its own oil which is contained in it’s fuel. However, it cannot be used to lubricate the chain and blade of the saw because of its highly flammable nature. Lubrication of the chain and blade is accomplished with a separate reservoir of oil, which needs to be kept topped off regularly with an oil of adequate viscosity. Failing to do so can cause damage to the saw’s blade and chain.

Another necessity to good chainsaw maintenance is to clean the sawdust off the filter which takes in air while the saw is operating. Ignoring it for a long time can leave the filter clogged. The fine dust accumulated inside is usually blown off by means of compressed air. The filter mesh can be washed with soapy water and later dried to prevent clogging. Also important for proper functioning of the saw is maintaining the sharpness of the blades. You can do that yourself, or, better still take your chains in to have them sharpened by a professional.
